Jim Steadman was born on 9th March 1921 in Soham (Newmarket Q2-1921 3B:878), baptised in Soham on 1st April 1921, son of Ellis William and Kate STEADMAN(née PALMER), shoemaker of Market Place, Soham.

In the 1939 register the family were at 130 Downfields, Soham. Father Ellis [12-12-1886] incapacitated; mother Kate [22-10-1895] and sister Mollie [29-5-1924] later KUGVAVSKI, then MARTIN. There are 5 closed records.

His uncle James Steadman, serving in the Suffolk Regiment, was killed in Belgium in 1915.

When the 2nd (London) Infantry Brigade was decimated in the landings at Anzio, the 1st London Scottish were then attached to 167th (London) Infantry Brigade.
Unable to find what they were doing, or where exactly on 2nd October, but the division was apparently resting between advances. Jim was the only one from his unit to die that day.
